Open corruption case repositories
As part of the FALCON project, selected research datasets are being made available to support transparency, knowledge sharing and further research on corruption and related criminal activities. The datasets provide structured information on corruption cases analysed within FALCON and can be used for research, policy analysis, training and educational purposes.
The repositories contain a total of 63 anonymised corruption case studies covering 4 main corruption domains addressed by FALCON:
- Border corruption
- Corruption and fraud in public procurement
- Sanctions evasion and circumvention
- Other corruption cases
Dataset contents
For each case study, the repositories include:
- Case description
A general description of the corruption case and its main characteristics - Corruption schemes and facilitators
Structured information on relevant features of the case, including:- Drivers and enabling factors
- Modus operandi
- Use of shell or front companies
- Use of legal arrangements
- Involvement of intermediaries
- Number of assets involved
- Transaction-related information
Where applicable, the datasets include information on:- Transaction types
- Financial and organisational arrangements linked to the case
- Transnational dimension
To better capture the international nature of corruption networks, the repositories also contain information on:- Number of satellite countries involved
- The satellite countries connected to the case
Data protection and responsible sharing
All information contained in the repositories has been anonymised in accordance with applicable data protection requirements, the available legal basis for access to the underlying information, and the intended target audience.
The datasets are intended to support research, capacity building, policy analysis and the development of innovative approaches for understanding and combating corruption while respecting legal, ethical and privacy requirements. FALCON places particular emphasis on responsible data use and the protection of personal information.
